The sight of a Komodo dragon walking the streets of Celaya, Guanajuato, must have been quite a scare for its inhabitants. The lizard, which is over a metre tall and three metres long, looks extremely intimidating.
The animal was spotted in the neighbourhood of Santiaguito, after authorities received multiple calls from neighbors, including one woman who reported that her cat had been devoured by the reptile.
After it was captured, the Komodo dragon was taken to the Center for Animal Assistance and Control (CASA) at the Environmental Department.
An extremely dangerous animal
Komodo dragons are native to Indonesia, mainly the island of Komodo, from which they take their name. They are the largest known species of lizard.
Its diet is strictly carnivorous, eating any animal smaller than itself, and even larger prey such as wild boar and water buffalo. When hunting them, it bites and waits.
It is one of the few venomous lizard species in the world, but its venom acts very slowly, causing its prey to die a long and tortuous death that can take days to arrive, only to be devoured by all the Komodo dragons that smell its scent.
Humans are not part of their natural diet, but if they get the chance, they would not hesitate to kill and eat a person.
